Previous proverbs teach all about wisdom. God gives wisdom to those who ask and seek, but today’s proverb teaches that He also actively protects, actively guards those who do so. He defends those He loves. He is not idle or far off. He does not turn away. He didn’t just create the world and everything in it, then go off and do something else. His hand keeps it all together (Isaiah 48:13). His eyes are ever upon His children (1 Peter 3:12).
Do you believe this? Do you believe that God is active today? There is no doubt that He was active in the Old Testament, and no doubt that Jesus was real and alive in the New Testament.
But what about today? What do you believe?
Proverbs 2:8 is familiar; however, it is only part of the sentence or thought. Sometimes “they” (those smart people who divided the Bible up into chapters and verses to make it easier to read and reference) even split sentences up and labeled them as different verses. Here is the whole thought:
For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; he stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity, guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of the saints. Proverbs 2:6-8 ESV
What is all of this talk about wisdom? Why is it important? Why do we need the Lord to guard the paths of justice and watch over us even today? And what does wisdom have to do with it?
I think it’s simple.
Because the things of the world seek to destroy us, lead us astray, tempt us to turn away from God- regularly, actively, and intensely. We know this, there is proof everywhere. And if Satan is actively seeking to steal God’s children away from Him, then God must actively be pursuing us. There are battles that we cannot see.
Today, seek wisdom from the Lord. He offers it. He wants to give it to you. He wants you to see the path ahead, the one He has chosen for you. He wants you to know the truth, to see right and wrong, to know the difference and have the courage to always do the right thing.
And then, know that He watches over you even at this very moment.
But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one. 2 Thessalonians 3:3
Walk in confidence today, my friend.
