Who is this woman? What is her speech? And what in the world can I take away from this proverb today?
The last section of Proverbs 1 describes wisdom as a woman who raises her voice out in public. She wants all to hear her message- from the top of wall, in the public square, in front of the city gate. Which, to be honest, is kind of weird. I don’t think women were supposed to do that back then. And even now, if I stood on a street corner and started yelling “my wisdom,” I’m pretty sure that wouldn’t go over very well either.
This wise woman is so excited about what she knows that she needs to announce it. She doesn’t care about it being weird, she just has to say it. She shouts it from the place she knows most people are going to hear, the gate to the city and the very center of what would’ve been the busiest place in ancient times.
The marketplace was probably a loud, crowded, hectic place, but wisdom just yelled her message louder.
The point?
Truth is right in front of us, yelling for us. God’s message is clear and visible and accessible. Listen to it, open your heart and accept His love. He calls to us from the mountain tops, from the sunrise and sunset, from the voice of a loved one, from the stillness of night. Even in the busiest place, He is still there. Don’t let the noisiness of the world (or the marketplace or the internet or your own head) drown out God’s voice.
Is the world too noisy? Is the path ahead foggy and unknown? Are you worried about the future or even today?
Stop, breathe, and listen. He is calling to you right now, my friend.
Turn at my rebuke; surely, I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you. Proverbs 1:23 NKJV
