Go to the ant, you sluggard!

Proverbs 6:6-8

What. Is. This?

Simply: there is honor in hard work.

The first part of Proverbs 6 is a warning from a father to a son about taking on someone else’s debt, which is a bad idea. Easy to do with a quick word, a nod, a handshake, but incredibly hard to undo. I believe what Solomon is teaching his son- as with much of the proverbs- is to stop and think, to not make rash decisions, to think things through and always weigh them against the word of God.

In Proverbs 6 in particular, Solomon is teaching his son the value of money, hard work, and the integrity of his word.

So, what about that hardworking ant?

The ant isn’t told what to do, the ant just does it. Each ant has a job whether it’s to protect, to gather, to clean up, or to fight, the ant just does its job. The goal is the survival of the colony.

This proverb is a warning against laziness and a reminder that we work for something bigger than ourselves.

How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest- and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.

  1. If the lazy would put in a hard days work they would have dignity and stop being cry babies constantly looking for hand outs but having no purpose in life

    • So true. God’s plan is good over all. He doesn’t want us to be lazy because it’s not good for us, our families, and society as a whole. I’m always in awe of how great our God is and how good and perfect His plan is.

      • Very true.

From my experience ( and I have a lot of it volunteering ) those on welfare are the rudest most ungrateful I have ever met
